2023 heralds the Year of the Rabbit in the Chinese zodiac. This fun Year of the Rabbit craft pack contains a printable rabbit mask, a lucky envelope and customizable coupons in blackline, to colour and decorate. A great craft activity that you can use with students or your child at home to teach about or celebrate the Chinese New Year! Children can colour the envelope, or you may like to print it onto red card instead.
Red envelopes are traditionally used to give gifts of money in China on special occasions such as Chinese New Year, birthdays and weddings. Red symbolizes happiness, prosperity and good luck in China and other Asian cultures. Traditionally, the amount of money in the red envelopes should be an even number for the New Year.
While the tradition is to put real money in the envelope, if you are using this resource in class you could use play money for children to practise counting and adding.
The pack also includes optional printable coupons that you may like to use instead. The PDF file includes blank coupons with editable headings for you to print and write on by hand. There is also a Word document which you can use to create completely customizable coupons! With the Word files, you can change the font, font colour and format the text boxes however you wish. You can use the coupons as a way to reward your students, or invite children to complete the coupons to give to friends or loved ones.
The envelope includes an image of a rabbit, the Chinese character for rabbit as well as the phrase “Happy New Year” in English and Chinese. There is also an editable text box for you to customize the envelope how you wish. I have added the default text “Year of the Rabbit”, but you could change this to add the name of a child, or delete the text completely so that children can write the name of a friend or loved one.
You can use this pack with a group of children or one-on-one. I have included a sheet with one rabbit mask, to save ink for individual use. There is also a sheet with two masks that you can use for groups, to save paper.
The elements have simplified shapes designed with younger kids in mind, although preschoolers will need some help cutting and assembling the mask and envelope.
